What is Android TV?

Android TV is an operating system for smart TVs based on the Android operating system, mainly known for its majority use in smartphones and to a lesser extent in smart watches.

Android is a Linux-based operating system acquired by Google in 2007 and has continued to develop and maintain it ever since.

Android TV was launched in 2014 initially on a device called “Nexus Player” that allowed to connect to a television and turn it into a smart television. Later it has been incorporated as an operating system for smart televisions of all kinds of brands such as Sony, Sharp or Philips.

It is currently the third operating system in market share for smart televisions, however it has an exponential growth mainly due to the low cost of incorporating it for manufacturers and the popularity of the “Android” brand itself.

Despite the popularity of Android, Google has decided to gradually replace the interface and name of "Android TV" with "Google TV" so that televisions that incorporate Android TV will have Google TV through an update by the end of 2022.

Among its advantages are: a large number of applications available (due to the popularity of Android on mobile devices), a minimalist interface, integration with Google services (Google Photos, Google Search, Google Assistant, etc.), the possibility of have several profiles for each user, easily send content from Android and iOS devices, tablets and even from a computer connected to the same WiFI network.
